Cosmetic Surgery Questions and Answers

How does Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) differ from traditional liposuction?
UAL uses state-of-the-art, third generation ultrasound technology to dislodge and remove fat from specific areas of the body. Because the fat is dislodged and separated before it is removed, there is less trauma to the other healthy tissue than in traditional liposuction. UAL also offers more control over the amount of fat that is removed. This UAL is done in an out-patient setting rather than a surgical center, and the patient is under local anesthesia and awake during the procedure.

How does Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) work?
First, the body areas to be treated are filled with a solution of saline and medicine to numb the area and shrink blood vessels in order to minimize blood loss and reduce bruising. Once the areas are numb, a small probe is used to transmit ultrasound energy and break up the fatty tissue. Breaking down the fat before removing it creates a gentler procedure and less bruising than traditional liposuction. The broken down and dislodged fat is then removed using a mild suction process.

What body areas can be treated with Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL)?
Nearly any body part can be treated with UAL. Some of the most popular areas are: abdomen, hips, inner thighs & outer thighs, male breasts, female breasts, chin, face, buttocks, love handles/sides or waist, knees, ankles, calves, back and the.

How much fat can be removed?
UAL is a procedure to help create a slimmer silhouette and treat problem areas in healthy individuals. The procedure is not intended as a weight loss solution. During your complimentary consultation the doctor will explain to you how much fat will be removed. Although you may not notice a significant change in weight, you will notice a more slender body shape.

Can multiple areas be treated at once?

Several problem areas may be treated at once. This is most common with areas that are contiguous.

Where is Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) performed?

UAL is performed in a medically clean or sterile out-patient environment under local anesthesia.

What about future weight gain and fat migrating to other areas?
Fat migration to other body areas is a common misperception. Following UAL, if you gain or lose weight, it will be proportionately distributed over your entire body. Adults do not regenerate new fat cells, so once the fat is removed it is gone for good, and, assuming a healthy lifestyle of proper diet and exercise, it will not return or migrate. However, some essential fat layers will remain untreated, so if you do gain a significant amount of weight the remaining fatty tissue will expand. Normal weight changes due to aging can also be expected.

What can I expect when I have the procedure?
Prior to your VASER ultrasound assisted liposuction procedure, a nurse or consultant will give you pre-operative instructions and answer any additional questions you have.

The day of your procedure you will be given a mild sedative to help you relax. You will change into a gown and our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon will then mark the areas that you want treated for your approval.

You will be escorted into the procedure room. The body areas to be treated will be numbed, and a small incision will be made in each area. A thin cannula delivering additional numbing agents will then be inserted so there will be minimal or mild discomfort during the procedure.

Once the areas are numb, a small probe will be used to transmit ultrasound energy and break up the fatty tissue. Breaking down the fat before removing it creates a gentler procedure and less bruising than traditional liposuction. The dislodged fat will then be removed using a mild suction process. Finally, after the fatty tissue is removed, bandages will be applied to protect the area and you will be escorted to the recovery room to relax.

Once you are cleared to leave you may still be slightly drowsy so you will not be able to drive and will need someone to pick you up. You will be scheduled to return for a follow up visit with the doctor in 24-72 hours.

How can I be certain Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) is right for me?
If you are healthy and have body areas that are resistant to fat loss even with diet and exercise, UAL may be a solution for you. Our Board Certified Plastic Surgeon will help you with your decision by explaining the procedure, anticipated results, and the recovery process to you during your complimentary in-office consultation.

How much does the UAL treatment cost?
A complimentary in-office consultation is needed to assess an accurate quote for your procedure. Total cost will vary depending on the number of body areas treated and the amount of fat removed, however UAL is significantly less expensive than traditional liposuction and starts at $3000 for the first body area.

How do I know which facial filler is best for me?
Depending on the location and deepness of lines, wrinkles or furrows, some facial fillers may work better than others. During your complimentary consultation, the medical staff will explain which product is best for your particular facial concern. In general, lines and wrinkles at or above the eyes are best handled with Botox. Lines or wrinkles below this area are best managed with fillers. Fillers can also be used to enhance lips, cheeks and the jaw line.
